Karacadağ's Black Stones, Hevsel's Green Breath

Walls and Hevsel Gardens under mist

Diyarbakır looks out over the Tigris with its walls built from black basalt of Karacadağ. These ramparts, exceeding five thousand meters, form the longest standing city wall in the world after the Great Wall of China; within runs a city memory—from caravanserais to mosques, from churches to bazaars.

The Hevsel Gardens at the foot of the walls are the city's green ribbon, continuously growing vegetables for thousands of years. The city's women carry what springs from this soil to market alongside handcrafts like carpets and ceramics.
